Repair or redo?

The honest answer saves you thousands.

Most stucco problems don't need a whole new wall. Here's how we decide, and we'll show you the evidence on site before you spend a dollar.

Repair & patch

Fix what's failing, match the texture, blend the color. The rest of the wall stays.

  • Cracks are narrow or limited to one area
  • The wall sounds solid when you tap it
  • Damage is local: a corner, a window, an old vent
  • No signs of water behind the stucco
Typical time1–3 days
ThenColor coat the wall

Full re-stucco

Strip to the frame or go over sound stucco, then build a new three-coat system.

  • Cracking across most of the house
  • Soft, crumbling or hollow-sounding sections
  • Water damage or failed paper behind the wall
  • You want a new texture or look anyway
Typical time2–3 weeks

Signs your stucco needs work

Walk around your house. Tap what you see.

Five minutes, no ladder. Check off anything you notice and we'll tell you what it usually means.

0Nothing checked yetTap anything you've noticed. Healthy stucco just needs a color coat every 10 to 15 years.

Texture & finish

Four finishes. One of them is yours.

Patches hide at noon and show up at 6 PM, when low sun rakes across the wall. Switch the light and see why we match texture in the evening.

How a re-stucco runs

Three coats. Real cure time.

Stucco cracks when it's rushed. Here's the schedule we hold to on a typical whole-house job, and why each day matters.

  1. Day 0

    Inspect & moisture check

We probe soft spots, map cracks and find the water source. A patch over a leak comes back.

  2. Day 1

    Protect & prep

Windows masked, plants wrapped, ground tarped. Failed stucco is cut back to sound edges.

  3. Days 1–2

    Lath & scratch coat

New paper and lath where needed, then a scratch coat raked so the next layer grips.

  4. Days 2–9

    Brown coat & cure

The brown coat builds the wall flat and true, then cures about a week. This is where others cut corners.

  5. Day 10+

    Finish & color coat

Texture matched in raking light, color blended corner to corner, site cleaned and walked with you.

Just a patch? Small repairs follow the same coats on a smaller scale, usually two short visits: one to rebuild, one to texture and color once it has cured.

About Adobe Ridge

Javier learned plaster mixing mud for his uncle at fifteen.

He grew up on job sites around Leland, then spent ten years on commercial plaster crews from Jacksonville to Raleigh. In 2011 he got his own license to do residential work the way he was taught: small crews, real cure times, and texture matched by hand instead of sprayed and hoped for.

Today Adobe Ridge has finished more than 900 walls across New Hanover County and the edge of Jacksonville. Javier still walks every estimate himself.

"Anyone can make a wall flat. Making a patch disappear into a 40-year-old wall is the actual job."

"They patched three spots where the old owners cut in vents. I honestly can't find them anymore, even in the evening light."

"Full re-stucco on our 1978 ranch house. Javier's crew let the brown coat cure a full week before finishing, which another bidder said we didn't need. Two summers later, not a single crack."

"Matching a 1990s lace texture is apparently hard. Two other companies said they'd have to redo the whole wall. Adobe Ridge matched it on the first try."

"Smooth plaster in our entry and stairwell. Beautiful work, and they protected every inch of the floor."

"I called about a crack expecting bad news. Javier showed me it was cosmetic and quoted a small repair instead of the re-stucco another company pushed. That's why he got the job, and my next one."

FAQ

Stucco questions, straight answers.

Still unsure? Text us a photo of the wall. Javier usually replies the same day.

(910) 555-0103
Can you really match my existing texture?

Yes, and it's most of our repair work. We study the wall in low evening light, make a test patch, and adjust the sand and trowel work until it disappears. Then we color coat the whole wall section so the color matches too.

Will the patch show after it's painted?

Not if it's done right. We blend to natural breaks like corners, trim and downspouts, and apply color to the full section instead of dabbing the patch. Spot-painting is why most repairs show.

How long does a full re-stucco take?

A typical house takes two to three weeks: prep and lath, scratch and brown coats, about a week of cure time, then the finish and color coat. Small repairs usually take two short visits.

Are hairline cracks a problem?

Usually not. Thin cracks are common as stucco cures and the house settles. Wide, growing or stair-step cracks, or anything with staining, deserve a look. Send us a photo and we'll tell you which one you have.

Do you work with stucco over foam or newer systems?

Yes. We repair and install traditional three-coat stucco and one-coat systems over foam, and we'll tell you which one your house has before quoting.

Are you licensed and insured?

Yes. North Carolina contractor license #9104502 for lathing and plastering, with general liability and workers' comp for the whole crew. Every job carries a two-year workmanship warranty.
