Lights flicker or dim

What it usually means

One flickering fixture is usually a loose bulb, a worn switch or a loose wire in the box. If lights flicker all over the house, it can be a loose neutral at the panel or at the utility connection, and that needs a look soon.

What we'll do

Test voltage under load, open up the fixture, switch or panel, and fix the loose or burned connection we find. You'll see the bad part before we replace it.

Call now

General guidance only. If you smell burning or see smoke, turn off the main breaker and call 911 first.

Meet the owner

The electrician who still answers the phone.

Darnell Price spent ten years wiring schools, clinics and new subdivisions across Mecklenburg County before he opened Kestrel in 2017. He named it after the small falcons that hover over the farm fields south of Concord: quick, precise, and always paying attention.

1,800 jobs later, Darnell still walks every estimate himself, checks every panel before the cover goes back on, and gives customers his cell number. The crew is small on purpose. You'll see the same faces from the first visit to the final inspection.

"If I wouldn't put it in my own mother's house, it doesn't go in yours. That goes for the breaker, the wire, and the person doing the work."

"Our 1978 house still had the original 100 amp panel and we wanted an EV charger. Darnell explained why we needed the upgrade before he quoted the charger, pulled the permit, and did both on one shutdown day. Passed inspection the first time."

"Got three quotes for a Level 2 charger. Kestrel wasn't the cheapest, but they were the only ones who did a load calc first. Price in writing, and it didn't change at the end."

FAQ

Straight answers.

The questions we hear most on estimates. Don't see yours? Text us a photo and a question, and we'll answer it.

Text (704) 555-0104
Do I need a panel upgrade to add an EV charger?

Not always. Many 100 amp panels can handle a Level 2 charger with the right breaker size or a load-sharing device. We run a load calculation on your actual panel before we recommend anything, and we'll tell you if you don't need the upgrade.

Do you pull permits?

Yes, on every job that needs one, including panel upgrades, EV chargers, new circuits and ADU work. We handle the paperwork and meet the inspector, and the permit cost is listed on your quote.

How long does a panel upgrade take?

The swap itself is one day, and your power is usually off for 6 to 8 hours. Before that, the permit and utility scheduling typically take one to three weeks depending on your city.

Are your estimates free?

Estimates for installs and upgrades are free. Troubleshooting visits have a flat diagnostic fee, and we credit it toward the repair if you go ahead.

Are you licensed and insured?

Yes. Kestrel Electric Co. holds North Carolina electrical contractor license #9104677 and carries general liability and workers' comp. Ask and we'll send the certificates before we start.

Do you work on older homes?

All the time. We replace fuse boxes and old panels, add grounding to two-prong outlets, and bring older homes up to code room by room, so you don't have to open every wall at once.
