Cary · Painting since 2016

The difference is in the line.

Interior and exterior painting for Cary and the Triangle. We wash, fill, sand, caulk and prime before a drop of color goes on, so the finish still looks sharp in year ten.

The Linen & Line palette

Six colors we'd put in our own homes.

Color is where most projects stall. Start with the six we reach for most in Carolina light. Pick a surface, tap a color, then bring your favorites to a walk-through.

Carolina Oat

The greige that doesn't turn pink at sunset. Sits happily next to oak floors and the warm afternoon light we get out here.

LRV is light reflectance: 0 is black, 100 is pure white. Screens vary, so we always bring painted boards.

Our prep standard

Paint is the last thing we do.

On a typical room, most of our hours happen before the first finish coat. It's the part most painters skip, and it's the reason our work still looks crisp a decade later.

Hours spent on prep & repair60%
Prep & repairFinish coats

12 of 12 prep steps included in every Linen & Line quote

  1. Move, cover & mask

Furniture to the center, canvas on floors, hardware and switch plates bagged and labeled by room.

  2. Wash the walls

Degreaser in kitchens and baths. Paint bonds to clean walls, and peels off greasy ones.

    Often skipped
  3. Fill every hole & ding

Two passes of filler, because the first one always shrinks.

  4. Tape & mud the cracks

Corner and ceiling cracks get repaired properly, not buried under caulk that splits next summer.

    Often skipped
  5. Sand smooth

Walls pole-sanded, trim sanded between coats, so nothing feels gritty under your hand.

    Often skipped
  6. Vacuum the dust

HEPA vacuum and tack cloth, so sanding grit doesn't end up trapped in your finish.

    Often skipped
  7. Caulk every joint

Trim to wall, casing to wall, the tops of baseboards. The gaps you see from across the room.

  8. Spot-prime repairs

Unprimed patches "flash" through as dull spots. Every repair gets primer first.

    Often skipped
  9. Lead-safe check

Homes built before 1978 are tested, and contained and cleaned to EPA lead-safe rules.

    Often skipped
  10. Cut lines by hand

A steady brush where wall meets ceiling. No tape bleed, no wavy edges.

  11. Two full finish coats

Not one coat "with good coverage". Two, with proper dry time between them.

    Often skipped
  12. Blue-tape walk-through

You mark anything you see with blue tape. We fix every piece before we pack up.

The crew on a striped nursery wall in Apex

About the owner

Small crew. Same faces. Every line checked.

Hannah Brooks started Linen & Line in 2016 with one van, a ladder rack and a habit of re-caulking trim that other crews had already called finished. Ten years and 820-plus projects later, she still walks every estimate herself and signs off on every room before the tape comes down.

The crew is small on purpose. The same painters show up every morning, they're employees rather than day labor, and every one of them is trained on our 12-point prep standard before they pick up a brush.

“Anyone can roll a wall. The job is the line where the wall meets the ceiling, and the hour of prep nobody ever sees.”

How it works

Five steps. No surprises.

You'll always know who's coming, what they're doing that day and what it costs. Most interiors wrap in under a week.

  1. Walk-through

Hannah visits, measures, looks closely at every surface and talks color. About 45 minutes, always free.

  2. Line-item quote

Texted to you within 48 hours. Every room, repair and coat listed with its own price.

  3. Prep days

We protect, wash, repair, sand, caulk and prime. Usually half the job or more.

  4. Two coats

Lines cut by hand, rooms reopened each evening, a photo update every afternoon.

  5. Blue-tape sign-off

You tag anything you see. We fix it all before the final invoice goes out.

“Hannah walked every room with us and talked us out of a gray I would have hated by February. The Carolina Oat she suggested is perfect with our floors. Crew was here at 8 sharp every day.”

“Cabinets look factory sprayed. Every door and hinge was labeled, and we could use the kitchen every night.”

“Our 1940s house had decades of paint on the window trim. They tested for lead first, stripped the worst sills, and the windows actually open again.”

“We got three quotes. Linen & Line wasn't the cheapest, but it was the only one that listed the prep line by line. Two summers later it still looks new.”

“Patched about a dozen anchor holes and a doorknob dent before we listed the house. Our agent couldn't find a single one.”

“The color consult alone was worth it. She brought big painted boards instead of tiny chips, and we looked at them morning, noon and night before deciding.”

Questions

Good to know before we start.

Still wondering about something?

(919) 555-0110Mon–Fri, 8 AM to 5 PM
How long does an interior repaint take?

Most single rooms take a day. A whole floor of a typical Cary home is two to four days. Your quote lists the days per room, and we reopen rooms every evening so you can live normally.

Do I need to move furniture or take things off the walls?

No. We move furniture to the middle of the room, cover it, take down and label switch plates and hardware, and put everything back. We just ask you to pack away small breakables and anything sentimental.

What paint do you use?

Premium 100% acrylic lines from the major manufacturers, chosen per surface: scrubbable matte or eggshell for walls, hard enamel for trim and cabinets, and low-odor, low-VOC options for bedrooms and nurseries. The exact product is named in your quote.

My house was built before 1978. Is that a problem?

Not for us. Our crew is lead-safe certified. We test, contain and clean up the way federal rules require, which plenty of painters quietly skip.

How does payment work?

A 10% deposit holds your dates. The balance is due after the blue-tape walk-through, once you've signed off on every room. We take cards, checks and bank transfer.

Do you guarantee the work?

Every job carries a two-year written workmanship warranty. If paint peels, blisters or cracks because of our prep or application, we come back and make it right.
